A few of the upstairs bars are a little too seedy for me. Rose bar is so dark you could put your hand in front of your face and you would not see it. That to me is a bad sign. Any bar that dims the lights so low that you can't make out if the girl sitting next to you is really a girl (yes, there are a lot of transvestites and transsexuals in Patpong, beware!), that's my cue to go elsewhere. Another sign that maybe you want to go elsewhere is any bar that has no tourists. Most tourists know which bars to stay out of (because of inflated prices or rip offs), so first time out, follow the crowd.

Most of the bars open around 7 p.m. (although the dancers do show up a bit late at times) and close at 2 a.m. You won't find any action during the daytime or after closing time. (I once showed up in the afternoon and got ripped off). Patpong is open 365 days a year. Thai pussy never sleeps.

So of all the bars, which are my favorite? Actually, none of them. I think Patpong has gone downhill quite a bit and over the last few years, I did not see a single girl in any bar that I wanted to take home with me. But that doesn't mean you will not find your dream girl there. Check it out yourself.

As is typical of any high class bar in Thailand, the mode of operation in Patpong is basically the same. Outside the bars will be a Neon lit sign with. the name of the bar. Right outside the door will be a few Thai boys or girls enticing you to, "Come inside, Sir ...happy hour ...we have fuck show, pussy show ...take a look ...no cover charge ...come inside..." The door boys may then aggressively, but gently, grab your arm or hand and try to pull you inside. I doubt they get commission for every tourist they convince to walk through that door, but by their aggressiveness and perseverance, you would think they were going to win the lottery if they could just convince one tourist to enter the bar. Obnoxious, if you ask me.

Once you enter through the door, you will pass a heavy curtain (to keep the air conditioned room stable and keep peeping toms from window shopping). Some bars, such as those at the Nana Plaza, boost they hire as many as 100 girls. Whatever the count, there is no shortage of women. Note there is no cover charge to enter any of the bars.
