  Cambodia: The NEW Frontier?
(Warning: Travel to Cambodia is recommended for highly experienced travelers only!)
Welcome to Phnom Penh, one of the most dangerous, dirty, rugged places in the world! While most of you will never make this trip, we're sure you'll get off reading about it and seeing some of the beautiful women who live here!

OD: I'd like to welcome back Mac Horn. Mac is author of several travel guides to the Orient and has produced and directed several travel videos to Southeast Asia. Mac, welcome . I heard you just returned from a trip to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. How was it?

MH: Cambodia is a scary place to travel to and I would caution that, unless you are a seasoned traveler of the Orient, you stay out. It is a rugged and dirty place; it can also be extremely dangerous in terms of security, so I want to make that clear at the outset. I do not advise you go there unless you really know what you are doing. Actually, the best and only way to go there is either on a tour or if you go with a friend who has been there and knows the scene well. Otherwise, it's best you stay away. Really!

OD: If it's so dangerous, why did you go there?

MH: I figured after living in the Philippines for two years, which is not exactly the world's safest place to travel to, I could handle anything. Actually, I was in Thailand at the time and needed to leave the country because my visa had expired. A close friend of mine is living in Cambodia and asked me to pay a visit, so I went there. I was lucky because he was there to show me around. Without him, I probably would not have gone ('Note: Without a visa, you can stay in Thailand 30 days. With a tourist visa, you can stay 59 days).

OD: So, how is Cambodia in terms of travel?

MH: On my first trip back in 1996, I enjoyed seeing some of the temples and just the excitement of being in a new country was enough to keep me entertained. However, on my second trip, I found the place both boring and oppressing. It reminded me somewhat of the Philippines in that if you throw sex out of the picture, there really is nothing to do there. After four days of doing basically nothing , I could not wait to get out and head back to Thailand where you can walk the streets at night without worrying about someone sticking a gun in your face.

OD: Sounds a little bit like downtown Los Angeles!

MH: Actually, I think LA is more dangerous, but that's a different story.

OD: Can you tell us about the women you can meet in Cambodia?

MH: Surprisingly, the main attraction in Phnom Penh is the beautiful, white-skinned Vietnamese girls who come there to work the sex industry. From what I could gather, the Vietnamese girls find the working conditions in Cambodia better than what they can find in their own country, which tells you how bad it can get in Vietnam. Anyway, there are more than a ton of Vietnamese girls you can find in the red light districts and these girls make the trip worth it. They are sweet and have incredibly gorgeous bodies.

OD: How would you compare the women in Cambodia with those in Thailand or the Philippines?

MH: A friend of mine who absolutely loves the girls in Cambodia put it this way: He said, "if Thailand is a candy store, then Cambodia is the factory." The girls in Phnom Penh, especially the Vietnamese, are absolutely adorable, as cute as they come. However, beyond the mere physical appearance, the Vietnamese and local Khmer sex workers in Cambodia are very business like and are there to make money off of the tourists. They are not there to date foreigners or find a guy to marry. So, I would say what you will find in Cambodia, in terms of relationships, is more similar to Thailand. The girls who are working the sex industry are professionals, not these helpless and victimized children, as the antisex groups would like to portray it. Actually, I found the girls in Cambodia a bit too hardened and professional for me, especially after living in the Philippines where, as a friend of mine put it, "the girls have heart."

OD: So, you would not recommend Cambodia as a place to go to find an Asian Wife?

MH: I'm not sure I could recommend Cambodia as a place to go for anything outside of a quick sexual romp; I couldn't imagine going there to find a serious relationship with a woman. If you want that, you will have much more success in the Philippines, where the girls seek marriage with American men.
OD: So where do you go to meet the women in Cambodia? Are there any strip joints or bars like what you would find in Thailand or the Philippines?

MH: The night life in Cambodia, similar to Vietnam, is quite dead. There is nothing in terms of night club where you can find sexy girls dancing on a stage or performing topless or naked. You certainly won't fin any sex shows like you will in Thai land or even in the United States. In fact, if you just came from a trip from Thailand or the Philippines, you will find the night life in Phnom Penh quite disappointing and boring. I did.

OD:
So, where in Phnom Penh does one go to meet the girls?

MH: There are basically three types of places you go to meet women: brothels, massage parlors and discos. The most popular brothel is Svay Pac (also called K11 because it is 11 kilometers out of town) which houses about 100 to 200 Vietnamese women. Svay Pac is a dirt road with worn out shacks which function as
brothels. Most of the clients who come there have "short time" sex right there in the brothel. The going rate is $5 for about fifteen minutes to a half-hour of sex with the girl of your choice.

MH: Air conditioned? You've got to be kidding me. You'll be lucky if there is even any electricity. The rooms are disgustingly filthy, if you ask me, and a bit on the scary side. Listen, this is third world country at its worst and when we talk about having sex in one of the brothels we are talking about a cubical room probably not much larger than the size of your bathroom at home. Speaking of bathroom, there are no toilets, no showers, no towels, no soap, no toilet paper ...it's a pit hole. That's why I never have and never will have sex with any of the brothel girls, that is, in the brothel itself.

OD: So where do you go to have sex?

MH: I pay to take the girl out of the brothel for the evening and spend the night with me in the luxury of my hotel. The cost is around $25, about the same as what you would pay for a girl in Angeles City (Philippines) or in Pattaya (Thailand). So, cost wise, Phnom Penh is not really that much cheaper than Thailand or the Philippines. The only advantage, which is actually quite a plus, is that the Vietnamese prostitutes, provided you get one who has not had a child, have gorgeous bodies. The last girl I had, who just turned 18, was stunning. Her body was picture perfect.

OD: What about the discos?

MH: Martini's is the most popular disco to pick up Vietnamese freelancers and Khmer women during the evening. By 10 p.m., the place is just swarming with anywhere from fifty to one hundred adorable women. Best of all, the ratio of girls to guys is two to one, so there will never be a shortage of women.

OD: What happens when you see a girl in the disco you like? How do you go about meeting her?

MH: You meet her the same way you meet Thai girls in the discos such as in the Marine bar in Pattaya or Angel's disco in Bangkok. When you see one you like, you stare at her and smile. Keep staring and eventually she will come up to you and say hello. Or she may wave you over to come to her to say hello. Once she has made her way up to you or signaled you to come over, that means she is available to take back to your hotel. It's that easy.

OD: Do any of the girls you will meet in Martini's speak English?

MH: Hardly. Some can answer simple questions, such as, "What is your name?" or "How old are you?", "Where you stay?", but beyond that, the conversation will die out quick. Don't bother trying to learn Vietnamese or Khmer, as it's a tonal language and a real bitch to learn.

OD: So if the girls don't speak any English, how do you communicate with them?

MH: As one friend of mine said sarcastically, "Who cares if they speak English when they have your dick in their mouth." By the way, I should mention that the Vietnamese girls call a blow job "yum yum", so you run around the brothels and discos asking the girls, "You yum yum?" On a more serious note, considering the fact that the girls do not speak English makes things both a bit complex and frustrating. You meet a girl who is really beautiful, you pay to take her back to your hotel to spend the night with you, and after sex, you just stare at each other as if the two of you were each from another planet. This is probably one reason why I spent the last two years living in the Philippines; the girls there can speak English quite well. With the Vietnamese and Khmer, there is little or no communication at all.

OD: That sounds very frustrating. I think a lot of guys would rather go some place where they can not only get good sex, but also have somewhat of a relationship beyond the bed.

MH: Yes, I would agree and that's why after four days in Phnom Penh I was ready to get out of there. I must admit, I did meet some truly sweet and gorgeous women, but beyond the sex, I found myself getting very bored. At least in Thailand, there are places you can take a girl where both of you can have a good time.

For example, in South Pattaya you, can go to a movie theater where the movie itself is in English, but it has Thai subtitles. So both you and your Thai date can enjoy your time together. Or you can take your girl bowling or, during the day, to the water park. Things like that make Thailand such a great place to vacation; not having things like that make Cambodia a boring place to spend one's time.

OD: Well, I guess knowing where no to go is just as important as knowing where to go.

MH: Yes, I really want to stress tha if you were thinking of going to Cambodia, you should think twice. It's no a safe place. In fact, just recently one of the main brothels as I men tinned, Svay Pak, had an inciden that could make a grown man shud der. Some customer apparently go pissed off at one of the brothel man agers and to get revenge, he threw hand grenade right in the middle o the brothel where some tourists were hanging out. This is the way the locals get revenge. If they get pissed off at someone, they just wait till the guy they are mad at goes into a public place, like a brothel, a shop, or a restaurant. Then, without even flinching at who might get hurt, they toss a grenade into the crowd, innocent victims not withstanding. This speaks for the way the locals feel regarding the value of human life. It's a scary place.

OD: Well, that's one place I won't be visiting. Mac, we wish to thank you for your time. We look forward to hearing from you again on where to travel to meet the Orient's most beautiful women.
