THE "60 MINUTES" Interview with ED BRADLEY, THE REAL STORY!

Inaccuracy In Our Media...

                                    About Chinese Orphanages

by Dr. Yao Wu Lee

This short posting is to protest a biased news story about Chinese orphanages, shown on the January 21st edition of 60 Minutes, on CBS Television in the United States.

As a parent who has adopted two wonderful children from China (in late August and Christmas Eve, 1995), I know firsthand that 60 Minutes did not relate the whole story. Our adopted children had been in Chinese orphanages since birth. When they came to us, one was two and a half years old and the other was almost four. They were both well cared for and healthy.

That which Mike Wallace and his guest neglected to mention sneakily injected bias into the program -- the kind of bias which we have come to expect from 60 Minutes.

For example:

They showed film clips by British filmmakers using hidden cameras. They don't say which Chinese orphanage they were filmed at or when. Why not? A woman defector who worked in a Shanghai orphanage showed photos of children, which were used to evoke sympathy. Both the woman and Mike Wallace neglected to state that this orphanage was mainly for children with medical problems! Nor did they state that this is OLD information; she worked there from 1988 'til 1993. They also didn't mention that as a defector, she used this information to get into this country. She had a vested interest in supplying information that might be biased, and tough guy interviewer Mike Wallace didn't even challenge her!
