My First Visit
To Southeast Asia

I remember one day I went over to visit Emily because she and her family invited me for lunch. I was sitting in her living room (which was about a 12 by 12 room) and all of a sudden I looked towards the front window and saw faces pressed up against the glass and screens looking inside. I asked Emily's mother what was going on. She explained in broken English that they were here to see me. I then realized it was happening again, this celebrity thing. I went outside and talked to all the people that were literally standing and waiting in line just to say hello to me. Some said, "Hi Joe", which is a term the Filipinos use when they see an American or white person. There were men, women and children just staring and smiling at me. I also noticed that because I was in their house, Emily and her family were being treated by all their friends as "the important people on their block:" God, it just never stops, especially when you are in a remote area such as the island of Cebu in Mandaue City. You won't believe the attention you get from these people. When it comes to hospitality, this is the place!
The day came when it was time for me to leave Cebu and start my journey home. Emily and her whole family drove me to the airport to say good-bye. Emily cried and hugged me good-bye before I made my way to the gate. She made me promise that I would write her as soon as I got back home. I have to stop right here and ask all of you guys out there, "When was the last time this happened to any of you where a beautiful, 18 year old virgin was begging you to marry her?" And you are 20 years older than she is, and it was o.k. with her Family? Certainly not in America, that's for sure.
